How Unit Conversion Works

To convert inches to centimeters, you first convert inches to meters (multiply by 0.0254) and then convert meters to centimeters (multiply by 100). In practice, the tool chains these two steps into a single multiplication factor.
Temperature is the exception. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin are not related by simple ratios because their zero points differ. Celsius to Fahrenheit requires both multiplication and addition: F = C * 9/5 + 32. Kelvin is offset from Celsius by 273.15 degrees.
